All in the Family
We have a syndrome that runs in our family that has different components to it; Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate, Clefted Uvula, Webbed Toes and Lip Pits. I come from a family of four brothers and sisters; each of us had at least one of the components listed. My siblings have also had at least one child with a cleft lip and palate
When my husband, Mark, and I were preparing to have children we knew that having a baby with a cleft was a big possibility. We found out we were pregnant in October, and met with a genetic specialist who told us that our chances were a 50/50 chance with every child that we would have. We found out for certain that our baby would have a bilateral cleft in December. Mark took it very hard. He had no experience with anything like this in his family. Although I just had the lip pits and didn’t have a cleft, I took comfort in knowing that many people in my family did and they were all beautiful people. Our precious little girl, Zoë Lynn, was born on June 14th. She had her cleft repair in September and is scheduled to have her bone graft in February. She is the happiest baby. She laughs and smiles all the time. All the worries and fears were gone the moment she came into the world.
