David P. Kuehn Speech Scholarship for Students Enrolled in a Communication Sciences and Disorders Program or Related Field
The David P. Kuehn Speech Scholarship is designed to help current master’s or doctoral students enrolled in a communication sciences and disorders or related program participate in the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA) annual meeting. The Kuehn Scholarship provides a one-year student membership in ACPA, $500.00 for travel expenses related to the annual meeting, and fully paid for meeting registration including the pre-conference symposia, study sessions and eye-openers. Priority will be given to PhD student candidates conducting or planning to conduct research related to cleft lip/palate and craniofacial anomalies. Current ACPA members are ineligible.
David P. Kuehn, PhD, past president of ACPA (1989) and member of ACPA since 1976, retired in 2009 from his position of professor at the University of Illinois, Department of Speech and Hearing Science. Wasting no time before a new academic year could commence without him, Dr. Kuehn established a fund with CPF to continue his commitment to education in the field of communication sciences and cleft lip and palate. Describing his motivation for establishing the scholarship fund with the CPF, Dr. Kuehn wrote:
I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to have known and worked with many outstanding researchers and clinicians over the course of my career, including that during my early years as a student. Now, it gives me great pleasure to be able to help students who themselves choose to make a difference in the lives of individuals born with cleft lip/palate especially as those individuals may be in need of specialized care in dealing with communicative disorders. My colleagues in speech are indispensable members of every cleft lip/palate team and I look forward to the active participation of the new cohort of speech professionals who will serve to advance knowledge and to provide treatment in this important field of endeavor.
CPF and ACPA extend their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Kuehn for his many years of energetic and productive contributions to the missions of both organizations and for his most recent gift establishing a direct connection to their continued well-being.
